Charities
One of the primary aims of the Computer Recycling Project is to donate computers to charities and similar voluntary organisations. Charities and bodies who have received computers include Friends of York Hospitals, The Princes Trust, York Council for Voluntary Services, Brunswick Organic Nurseries, and the Drake Music Project.
"On behalf of the Prince's Trust Volunteers, York team 12, I would like to say thank you for the kind donation of two computers. The volunteers rely heavily on donations of many sorts to help them with their various community projects and challenges. The volunteers can use the computers to write letters and create CVs. Before your assistance we only had one computer and each team is made up of around ten to fifteen volunteers, so it is great to have some extra computers to work with." (Sean Craven)
Computer specifications for donated machines vary with what we have in stock, but typically they are Pentium IV 2GHz and above. All our charity machines come supplied complete with monitors, mice, keyboards and all required cabling.
We can also donate individual components, for example network cards, scanners or printers.
If your charity is interested in larger numbers of PCs, please also get in touch. For example, in October 2002 we donated 32 Pentium PCs and monitors to Community Regeneration York, who will pass them on to charities, voluntary organisations and similar schemes with which they work.
Top Tip
One of the main problems we have in donating computers to charities is us finding the time to load Windows on to the donation computer. If your charity is receiving a computer from us and you have a resident computer enthusiast who can install Windows, please do tell us as this normally speeds up the donation process quite dramatically!
The Small Print
To receive a computer, you (or a representative/friend) must be able to collect the equipment in person from our workshop. We cannot ship or pack computers, and require a simple disclaimer to be signed, with no exceptions. Therefore we cannot give computers to individuals or organisations outside the United Kingdom unless a local contact can collect the computers. Depending upon our stock, there may be a waiting list for computers. Also (contradictory as it may seem) we are always short of space in the workshop, so we appreciate prompt collection whereever possible.
Please feel free to email us about possible charitable computer donations.
